The world’s largest cruise ship visits St. Kitts

Basseterre, St. Kitts (March 24, 2016) – The world’s largest cruise ship, the Oasis of the Seas, visited St. Kitts for the first time yesterday, bringing more than 6,000 passengers.

The Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas, weighs 252,282 tons and is approximately 50% larger than any other cruise ship at sea and home to an unprecedented array of amenities, including zip lining to surfing, dining discoveries to DreamWorks characters onboard.

Minister of Tourism, International Trade, Industry and Commerce, The Hon. Lindsay F.P. Grant, led a delegation of stakeholders to participate in a plaque-exchanging ceremony to mark this significant occasion.

“It gives me great pleasure to welcome the inaugural call of the Oasis of the Seas,” Minister Grant said. “This is one the greatest ships in the world, and so when in port, it is indeed a very special event for the destination.”

Minister Grant pointed out that this inaugural call was the first of five visits for 2016, in a year in which St. Kitts will exceed one million cruise passenger arrivals for the cruise season.  He said Port Zante was built more than 20 years ago, however, the port is able to accommodate the largest ships in the world, which is a testament to the vision of those people who conceptualized the port as well as to those who oversaw its upgrades.

Captain of the Oasis of the Seas, Per Kristoffersen, said the ship came with 6,380 guests, with more than 2,183 crew members representing a total of 77 nationalities.

“This is indeed a very special ship,” Captain Kristoffersen said. “However, I feel St. Kitts is even more special, especially since I have heard that St. Kitts has one of the best golf courses in the Caribbean, and so I am very eager to play few rounds.”

Also present at the ceremony were officials from the Ministry of Tourism, St. Kitts Tourism Authority, St. Christopher Air and Sea Port Authority, High Command of the St. Kitts Police Force and the ship’s agents Delisle Walwyn & Company Limited.

A total of three cruise ships arrived in St. Kitts that day, bringing approximately 14,000 visitors to the destination.

Caribbean Love Affair of the Senses Q & A Recap with Chef Jason Howard (#IloveCaribbeanFood)

Chef Jason Howard took part in a social media discussion for the CTO via Twitter/ Periscope regarding this year’s Caribbean Romance theme looking at the romantic delights of Caribbean food and drink, where he was joined with mixologist Dameain Williams.

They were both posed respective questions in line with their professions.

Q1. As this is CTO’s year of romance, what are some of your personal favorite dishes that set the right romantic mood?

For me one of my dishes that could work would be my red cabbage cured salmon dish,
due to its colour, and it can be either a starter or main.

Q2. What are some of the foods that couples normally request?

This will depend on the couple as some will have differing preferences as someone maybe vegetarian and others may like fish over meat. My refined jerk chicken is a definite hit, as people want to try it out.

I also have some vegetarian and vegan dishes such as a mixed green salad with root vegetables. For those who like seafood, I have a green mango & crab salad, plus a vibrant coloured and flavored seafood medley.

Q3. Is there a differing favorite dish among men and women?

There is not so much a favorite with couples, but they are definitely into sampling my refined jerk chicken.

Q4. What are some of your favorite authentic Caribbean aphrodisiac ingredients?

For me, it has got to be the Scotch Bonnet pepper and my Scotch Bonnet oil. The pepper or chili as it’s referred to, has some amazing properties the heat being one of them, as it creates a sensation in the mouth and on the lips with pleasurable warmth. Otherwise eating a nice ripe juicy mango in the sun is a nice sensual pleasure in its own right.

Q5. Are there any other ingredients you use as an aphrodisiac in your dishes?

As I’m in England I suppose asparagus is meant to be an aphrodisiac and I’ve created a ‘Green Envy Asparagus Salad’.

Q6. We had Mixologist Dameain Williams create some cocktails, what kinds of foods do you think go well with these two list of cocktail ingredients?

chefhoward2With the first cocktail Dameain Williams made using lemon, mango, basil with passion fruit juice, this I would turn into a sorbet, otherwise it could work with my saffron poached pears.

Looking at the second cocktail ingredient list of apple juice, yellow bell peppers, mint leaves, lime and simple syrup.

I would opt for my sweet potato crème brûlée. The apple juice, lime and simple syrup would bring out sweet and acid elements in the cocktail and the mint leaves would be aroma with bell pepper adding a slight freshness with the mint. With my dessert I could contrast the chilled cocktail with the warmth of my dessert together with mandarin segments that could be glazed or poached in a rum and cinnamon syrup.

Q7. What are some of your MUST HAVE ingredients to make the flavor of certain dishes “pop”?

Definitely good seasoning especially with meat and seafood dishes, aromatics and flavors such as the spices of nutmeg and cinnamon always work well. And I mentioned before my Scotch Bonnet I use it in range of both sweet and savory to give it that pop.

Ann-Marie Brooks via twitter asked – @Chefjasonhoward What’s a good non-alcoholic cocktail for a dinner party?

I think anything with a virgin mojito base and something sparkling will work, but that definitely is a Dameian Williams question as he’s a master mixololgist.

Otherwise you could try my dessert cocktail that is definitely alcohol free, fruity and fun served in a martini glass. When I posted this during the twitter discussion Dameain did like the look of it.

He’s appeared on UK radio, television and the newspapers passionately promoting Caribbean cuisine. When he appeared on BBC’s MasterChef:The Professionals, he was praised for being the first ever chef to display Caribbean food with refinement in the show’s history according to one of the judges.

Aside from this he’s involved in mentoring other chefs and has set up the Caribbean Culinary Collective, a showcase of talented chef’s in or from the Caribbean putting flavour, skill and taste from the islands on the international map.

Martinique welcomes worldwide sport competitions, putting the island under the spotlight

NEW YORK, NY (March 21, 2016) – Martinique, the Caribbean Island with French Flair, the Island of Flowers and the Rum Capital of the world is well known for its enchanting sceneries, its strong heritage, delightful gastronomy and much more. Open International d’Eco Beach Tennis – April 1st to 3rd

Eco Beach Tennis, a sport that was born in Italy 30 years ago, will see the Open Eco Beach Tennis Competition take place from April 1st to 3rd at Le Carbet Beach. This silver/grey sand beach will be the perfect location for the 5th edition of this competition, which is sure to attract international and local players alike. Jetracer World Championship IJSBA – April 15th to 17th 

Martinique welcomes the first round of Jetracer World Championship IJSBA, an International Jet race Competition. The lovely fishermen town located on the Caribbean Coast will proudly host this three-day event, with two stages in Sainte-Anne and Fort-de-France, the Capital city. About 50 competitors from the United States, Russia, Canada, Kuwait, Qatar, Belgium, Peru, the United Kingdom, Italy, China, South Korea, Japan, Saudi Arabia and France will compete on Martinique’s warm Caribbean waters before the second round in Russia in August 2016. Martinique Surf Pro – April 17-24, 2016

After a successful first edition in 2015, Martinique will once again host the Martinique Surf Pro, a World Surf League (WSL) Qualification Series event, from April 17-24, 2016. The competition will take place in Basse-Pointe, a “secret” surf spot cherished for its powerful and especially long waves that break right over an exposed reef break. Tchimbé Raid – May 4th and 5th

Tchimbé Raid International is a two-day trail made with three different races in the heart of Martinique. The first race runs along Tchimbé Raid a 57 miles trail, followed by Tchimbé Volcano 31 miles, ending up with Tchimbé Piton at 11 miles long. Caribbean tourism officials gather in Antigua and Barbuda to address business and service excellence in the industry

(St. John’s, Antigua) March 21, 2016 – As Caribbean tourism rebounds, tourism practitioners within the region are making their next strategic move by focussing on enhancing the quality of their product, and developing a strong culture of service excellence.

The Secretary General of the Caribbean Tourism Organization, Hugh Riley and other well-known Caribbean tourism officials will meet in Antigua and Barbuda to address the theme ‘Making Excellence a Habit: Service Loyalty and Profitability in Caribbean Tourism’ at the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s  8th annual Tourism Human Resources Conference, taking place from May 11 – 13, 2016.

Collaborators, the Antigua and Barbuda Ministry of Tourism, Economic Development, Investment & Energy, and the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority, are voicing their support for the three day tourism gathering being held in Antigua for the first time.

Antigua and Barbuda Minister of Tourism, the Honourable Asot Michael, said, “We are committed to ensuring the well-rounded development of the tourism sector.”

St. Kitts & Nevis rank #10 of the 25 Best Caribbean Islands by Business Insider

Basseterre, St. Kitts (March 7, 2016) – Continuing to add accolades to its growing portfolio, The St. Kitts Tourism Authority is pleased to announce that the Federation is ranked at #10 of the 25 Best Caribbean Islands by Business Insider. The article appears on the publication’s website as of February 26, 2016.

Norwegian resumes seasonal service to Martinique

NEW YORK, NY (February 25, 2016) Norwegian, the World’s Best Low-Cost Long-Haul Airline and Europe’s Best Low-Cost Airline, will resume its seasonal winter service to the French Caribbean following a successful first winter season. Nonstop service from Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), Logan International Airport (BOS) and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) to Martinique will begin on November 10. Norwegian’s service between the United States and the French Caribbean began last December.

The flights for the 2016 winter season will operate three times per week to each island Martinique from New York, and twice per week to each island Martinique from Baltimore/Washington, D.C. and Boston, respectively.
