The Caribbean Should Lead in Sustainable Tourism Development, Declares CTO Secretary-General

BARBADOS (September 27, 2023) – “We believe the Caribbean should lead, and not follow, on investing in a healthy, sustainable, and productive future for the prosperity of our people and our planet,” declared Dona Regis-Prosper, the newly appointed Secretary-General and CEO of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), as she delivered the feature address at a virtual Caribbean forum celebrating World Tourism Day 2023 on Wednesday.

Echoing the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s message this year, Regis-Prosper elaborated on the holistic strategy that focuses on more and better-targeted investments “for people, for planet and for prosperity.” This strategy captures community empowerment, environmentally responsible growth, and equitable wealth creation underpinned by resilience.

Highlighting the urgency of the call to action, the regional tourism chief posed three pivotal questions:

• “How is the Caribbean, the world’s most tourism-dependent region, going to respond to this international call?”

• “How will we contribute our unique experience and expertise to the global discussion on matters such as renewable energy, climate change and carbon neutrality, inclusivity, and the need for economies of scale to increase local linkages and reduce leakages?”

• “How will our leaders in the public, private and nonprofit sectors translate theories into policies and practical applications that allow our communities and our industry to develop more sustainably and more equitably?”

The tourism leader delved into the three foundational pillars underpinning this year’s World Tourism Day theme:

People: Regis-Prosper stressed the need for a focus on people-centered tourism, which requires addressing the Caribbean’s knowledge and skills gap. Affirming the critical importance of interpersonal relationships in tourism, she shared, “Research confirms what those of us in the tourism and travel industry know firsthand – that inter-personal, face-to-face interactions with others play a significant part in the visitor experience.”

Planet: Pointing to the Caribbean’s role as a guardian of fragile ecosystems, she underscored the urgency for “green investments and environmentally conscious practices.” Citing initiatives such as the Caribbean Hotel Energy Efficiency Action Project, she emphasized the Caribbean’s commitment to sustainability: “As a global brand, Caribbean tourism must continue to embrace best practices in environmental, social and governance activities that demonstrate our commitment to future generations.”

Prosperity: According to the CTO Secretary-General, the final pillar highlights the need for public-private sector and community collaborations to enhance benefits from tourism. She outlined the need for diversity, equity and inclusion, and cultural respect, stating, “The CTO supports the call of the UNWTO for new and innovative solutions and investments that stimulate and underpin the tourism sector’s growth, productivity and sustainability. It is a call to invest simultaneously in our talented human capital. When our people, our communities and our planet thrive, our industry and our destinations prosper.”

Building on the three S’s of Social Inclusion, Sustainability, and Smart Destinations and Businesses, Regis-Prosper envisions Caribbean tourism led by green growth, which involves green investments, green technologies, and green business practices.

The virtual forum was a combined initiative of the Caribbean Tourism Organization in collaboration with the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association, the University of the West Indies, the Organization of American States, the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States Commission, the Caribbean Broadcasting Union, and CTO allied members: the International Institute of Tourism Studies at The George Washington University, and Hibiscus International.

CTO Chairman Kenneth Bryan Calls for Increased Investment in the Caribbean

NEW YORK (September 16, 2023) – On the occasion of the inaugural USA-Caribbean Investment Forum at the New York Marriott Marquis, Kenneth Bryan, Chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Organization and Minister of Tourism of Cayman Islands spoke of the immense investment potential of the Caribbean region that beckons investors worldwide.

Representing 25 nations and territories of the Caribbean, Minister Bryan shared that the region has long been admired for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, vibrant cultures and warm people, making it an exceptional choice for investment.

As the fastest growing region for tourism, the Caribbean also faces unique challenges, such as vulnerability to climate change, a reliance on imported fossil fuels, and the need for inclusive economic growth. He noted that it is the responsibility of governments to seek sustainable investment and innovation.

Supporting this call for action, Minister Bryan remarked: “Today’s travelers are increasingly conscious about the environment, and actively seek destinations and properties that embrace sustainability and eco-friendliness. Sustainable tourism is, therefore, not just a buzzword; it is a commitment that Caribbean leaders are taking seriously.”

Minister Bryan encouraged the attending investors to become part of the sustainable tourism development movement through projects that embrace environmentally responsible practices, such as energy-efficient designs, waste reduction and responsible water management.

The Caribbean leader reported that sustainable tourism and renewable energy are two sectors on the forefront for growth and was encouraged that G20 leaders recently committed to scaling up financing for these as well as other sustainable development goals.

“As Caribbean leaders, while we welcome foreign direct investments, we remain committed to ensuring that investments in our tourism industries benefit the local population and create a positive social impact,” he added.

Sustainable tourism goes beyond greener initiatives and should also contribute to the local economy, which supports the Caribbean’s culture and traditions. It also provides a unique selling proposition in keeping with the recognition that countries should focus on attracting foreign direct investments in sectors which advance their national development objectives.

Minister Bryan concluded with an invitation to the investors to become part of the Caribbean story of economic growth, community empowerment, sustainability, and unforgettable travel experiences in the region.

The USA-Caribbean Investment Forum, organized by the Caribbean Association of Investment Promotion Agencies (CAIPA), is a pivotal event for investors, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders seeking to capitalize on the opportunities within the Caribbean region.

The theme of the two-day forum is “Partnering for Sustained Development in the Caribbean”.

CTO’s New Secretary-General Shares Vision for Regional Tourism

CAYMAN ISLANDS (September 8, 2023) – Addressing a group of local, regional and international media during a live press briefing in the Cayman Islands yesterday, Dona Regis-Prosper, Secretary-General and CEO of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) presented some of her initial plans for leading the intergovernmental body that serves as the tourism development agency for 25 Caribbean countries and territories.

Regis-Prosper, who is St. Lucian by birth, was joined by Kenneth Bryan, Chairman of the CTO’s Council of Ministers and Commissioners of Tourism, who also serves as Minister of Tourism & Ports of the Cayman Islands, and Rosa Harris, Chairman of the CTO’s Board of Directors and Director of Tourism for the Cayman Islands.

Acknowledging the strategic, multidimensional nature of the CEO’s responsibilities, Minister Bryan lauded Regis-Prosper for her “wealth of experience, a passion for tourism and a commitment to the Caribbean that aligns perfectly with our organization’s vision”.

Regis-Prosper has held prominent leadership roles in the public and private sectors within the Caribbean region. “Her qualified understanding of the challenges and opportunities we face positions her as an ideal leader to guide the organization into a prosperous future,” said Minister Bryan.

As Secretary-General, Regis-Prosper will be charged with providing strategic direction and leadership to the CTO staff, collaborating with more than two dozen member countries and territories, and working closely with partners and stakeholders to advance the organization’s mission.

In addition to re-imagining and transforming the organization, Director Harris noted that Regis-Prosper’s role also involves addressing a range of pressing issues facing the Caribbean’s tourism industry, including advocacy, research, airlift, sustainability, and resilience.

During the past week, Regis-Prosper was introduced to the focus areas that the organization’s members and partners have indicated are most important to them, including delivering membership benefits and value; generating greater tourism linkages between the industry and other economic sectors nationally, regionally, and globally; promoting multi-destination tourism as a collaborative strategy; climate change; crisis management; establishing tourism standards to ensure the region’s continued competitiveness and attractiveness; human resources capital and workforce management; and the promotion of the Caribbean’s diverse heritage and culture.

“I am deeply honored to step into the role of Secretary-General of the CTO. The Caribbean is a dynamic region with immense tourism potential. With the support of my Chairmanship and the CTO team, I am confident that we will implement the best strategy for leveraging our Caribbean brand for the benefit and greater good of the people of the Caribbean region,” stated Regis-Prosper, who added that she is committed to “collaborating closely with all our members” to grow the region’s tourism industry.

Before fielding questions from media on topics ranging from airport management and capacity to marketing and the sharing economy, Regis-Prosper pledged to have open ears for members’ concerns.

“My first order of business has been and will continue to be listening in the coming months. I intend to learn and be informed as much as possible about the challenges faced by each member and to develop workable solutions that will be beneficial nationally and regionally,” she assured.

Next up on the agenda for the new Secretary-General and her team is the returning State of the Tourism Industry Conference (SOTIC), the Caribbean’s premier forum for the presentation and exploration of the major issues impacting the development of the sector in the region, which will be held in the Turks and Caicos Islands, October 9-13, 2023.

Prior to the appointment of Regis-Prosper, Neil Walters, CTO’s Director of Finance and Resource Management, had been filling the position as Acting Secretary-General and CEO since 2019.
